What is LEED?
Supporting Sustainable Construction
Created and operated by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world, with over 100,000 certified projects. LEED applies to virtually all building types and provides a framework for creating healthy, efficient, and cost-effective green buildings.
How Does LEED Work?
LEED certification is achieved by earning points for meeting specific criteria across categories such as energy efficiency, water use, materials selection, indoor environmental quality, and overall sustainability. Depending on the points earned, projects can achieve one of four certification levels:
• Certified: 40–49 points
• Silver: 50–59 points
• Gold: 60–79 points
• Platinum: 80+ points
